Parks Canada is planning to initiate a controlled burn program in Banff National Park next year. These burns will occur around the town of Banff and as such some residents are expressing concern. The burns will be properly managed and will not pose a risk to the town.
This issue raises the importance of fire in an ecosystem. Forests are naturally subjected to fires and this promotes healthy growth and renewal. If fires are prevented from burning, not only does this pose a greater risk for fires in the future, but it is damaging to the ecosystem. Controlled burns are a good way to retain the benefits of a forest fire without the negatively impacting urban areas or putting lives at risk.
