It seems the powerline propsal in Gros Morne National Park is closer to the discussion I heard in New Zealand than I first realized. The power lines are to carry hydroelectricy and thus "green energy." However the environmental impact of the power lines is, as yet, unknown. Furthermore these lines would be cutting through a protected area that is of significat natural value and also important to Newfoundland's tourism industry. (Gros Morne is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.)
Two more points worth noting are: that Parks Canada and the Minister of the Environment can prohibit such a development; and a corridor has already been surveyed for such developments that runs outside the park boundaries.

If you want to save Gros Morne then tell Ottawa to abide by the constitution and stop capitulating to Quebecs dog in the manger attitude towards NL.
