Canadian Television in the "Digital Future"

Recently the CRTC has set its sights on the "digital future." With the advent of digital cable, watching television is becoming an increasingly personalized experience; one that will quickly become interactive. There is already a large number of channels to choose from and movies can be watched at any time through "on-demand" services.

In order to preserve Canadian content in the ever-expanding world of digital television, the CRTC is looking to provide increased funding for local broadcasters. However their main focus at this stage appears to be advertising. Targeted advertising may soon become a possibility along with the insertion of ads into programs and movies ordered through an "on-demand" service. The revenue generated by such advertising would enable, according to the CRTC, the broadcasting system to compete with similar media offered on the internet.
